You’re relaxing on the couch and all of a sudden you think, “Hhhmmm…I’m feeling hot. Let me adjust the AC.” You walk over to your thermostat and immediately feel like screaming – the temperature in the house is 85! You frantically check the switch to make sure it’s on, and it is on. You try pushing the button to lower the temperature, but nothing happens. You listen carefully for any sign of the HVAC unit kicking on, but….nothing. Now, you may say a couple of words that would have resulted in a good mouth wash with bar soap back in the day.
So, what do you do when your air conditioner stops working?
The first rule of thumb is not to panic. Follow these steps, and you’ll be back to your cool, comfortable home in no time.
Step #1:
Check to make sure the thermostat is on and is set at a temperature lower than the current one. This seems obvious, but it’s the easiest fix if that’s the source of the problem.
Step #2:
Check the breaker. Sometimes, if you have too many electronics on at the same time, you may end up blowing a fuse. Go to wherever you have your breaker and make sure everything is in the on position.
Step #3:

Step #4:
Grab a fan and ice water. As our technicians are working on your HVAC unit, it’s important to stay as cool as possible and hydrated. This means sitting by a fan and drinking a lot of ice water. If possible, consider visiting a neighbor or friend for a little while. You can also head out to the mall or store to enjoy the AC while yours is being repaired.
